Glen, if you have a spark of genuine antiques only a thin layer of oil on metal surfaces. The patina, or the end of wood and metal helps to validate the age and value of "antique firearm" to. I have many antiques in my shop, people want to own and looked to see if they are safe to operate. I try to explain the truth value of historical weapons and the depreciation, if I do "quite bright again." If you have any problems with rust on the metal surface, and inside the cavity, a restorer of firearms. Not all dealers do restoration, is a careful re-establish old truth, without devaluation of the weapon.
As for old swords or knives, finishing, making the piece again, a thin layer of oil is the question of do for your protection. An example would beRemoil or even 3 in 1 oil. Do not use a product such as motor oil, a preservative, a sticky film on the surface, this may be difficult to clean and subsequently damage the finish. Hope this helps.
If you do not like. The idea of WD-40 and the abrasive cleaning of antique swords and guns gives me goose bumps.
That's how it ruined most of the antique ... Clean amateur.
Amateurs old is not clean metal.
This objective is part of the value.
Wipe oiled. That is all.
Cleaning is a professional guardian.
To keep it clean and water resistant, one can not beat WD40.
The theme of the powder and a thin layer of oil a barrier to oxygen. No chemical cleaners.
If you are really old and really ... to control only a cloth with oil.
Clean all bright and shiny ... Patina and lose value.
Jeff
